Petfood Forum is renowned for bringing together pet food professionals and many of the top pet food companies from around the world. Of the top companies globally, the top seven are based in the United States, according to Petfood Industry’s Top Pet Food Companies database. It can oftentimes be hard to connect with some of these pet food industry titans, but Petfood Forum makes it possible.
In 2016, 9 of the current 10 top US based pet food companies were in attendance at Petfood Forum. Specifically, the top two pet food companies, Mars Petcare Inc. and Nestlé Purina, were present to conduct business and network with the thousands of pet food professionals that were in attendance at the 2016 event. Mars Petcare Inc. and Nestlé Purina are bringing in more revenue than the other eight top US based companies combined, together accounting for US$29,141,400,000 in pet food revenues worldwide. To compare, the remaining eight of the top US dog and cat food industry companies brought in US$8,894,747,000.
After purchasing Proctor & Gamble’s pet food business in a US$2.9 billion deal, Mars has been solidifying itself as the world’s leading pet food company since 2014. In 2016, Mars has focused on positioning its acquired brands.
Nestlé Purina made two acquisitions in recent years that may help the company adapt to current growth trends in specialty cat and dog food. In January 2014, Nestlé Purina acquired Zuke’s Performance Pet Nutrition (natural pet treats). In September 2015, Nestlé acquired Merrick Pet Care (natural and organic pet food).
Similar to Mars Petcare Inc. and Nestlé Purina, the rest of the top pet food companies have also been involved in mergers and acquisitions. According to Petfood Industry’s 2016 Top Pet Food Companies issue, these business deals have resulted in shifts of the rankings of these eight companies.
